What to Check When Your Packaging Sample Arrives

A simple review of fit, assembly, printing and handling before production.

Key takeaways

  • Check the sample with the actual product and all accessories or protective wrapping.
  • Try assembly and opening more than once to identify awkward folds or handling steps.
  • Record what the sample demonstrates and resolve outstanding print or finish questions before approval.

Check fit with the actual product

Use the product you intend to ship, including any wrapping, caps or accessories. Confirm that it sits in the intended orientation and that the insert leaves enough room for removal. Check that the box closes cleanly without putting pressure on the contents.

Try assembly more than once

Fold, fill and close the package several times. Look for awkward tabs, unclear folds or extra packing steps. Ask the supplier which tolerances to expect in production. Note whether the sample uses the proposed material and construction or is only intended to demonstrate the structure.

Record approvals and open questions

Check text, artwork orientation and the placement of information near seams and folds. A plain structural sample cannot establish the final printed color or finish. Record what you approve and request clarification on anything the sample cannot demonstrate before approving production.
