Planning Packaging for a Small Product Range

Compare shared box sizes and product-specific inserts without losing sight of fit.

Key takeaways

  • Group products by dimensions, weight and protection requirements.
  • Compare the storage and packing implications of shared boxes against dedicated sizes.
  • Test bundles and document which box and insert belong to each product.
Illustrative packaging concept

Group products by their packing needs

List the dimensions, weights and protection needs of each product. Group items that can reasonably share a structure, while keeping fragile or unusually shaped products visible in the brief. Do not assume that similar retail prices mean similar packaging needs.

Compare shared boxes with dedicated sizes

A shared box can simplify storage and packing, but may need an insert or extra space. Dedicated sizes can improve fit while adding more packaging variants to manage. Ask suppliers to quote the actual quantity for each size so the comparison reflects your planned orders.

Keep the packing instructions consistent

Record which product uses which box and insert. Test mixed-product bundles as well as single-item orders. Clear packing instructions can be as useful as the box design when you want each customer to receive a consistent presentation.
