Questions to Ask Before Approving Packaging Artwork

Keep the dieline, print details and approval responsibilities clear.

Key takeaways

  • Use the supplier’s current dieline and confirm panel orientation, trim and fold guidance.
  • Ask which colors, materials and finishes a proof can accurately represent.
  • Assign one final approver and save the approved artwork with the agreed specifications.

Confirm the dieline and its orientation

Use the supplier’s current dieline for the agreed structure and size. Ask which panels face outward, where the seams sit and how the package opens. Keep text and important graphics away from trim and fold areas according to the supplier’s guidance.

Understand what the proof represents

Ask whether the proof shows layout only or also represents the proposed color and finish. A screen preview cannot demonstrate every material effect. If color matching or a specialty finish matters to your brand, discuss physical proof or sample options and any associated charges.

Agree who gives final approval

Choose one person to collect feedback and approve the final artwork version. Check product information and required labeling with the appropriate people before approval. Save the approved file and written specifications together so a future reorder has a clear reference.
