Your First Custom Packaging Order: A Practical Checklist

Turn a packaging idea into a clear brief before you contact a supplier.

Key takeaways

  • Record product dimensions, packed weight and protection needs before choosing a box.
  • Give suppliers the same brief so quantities, specifications and full costs are easier to compare.
  • Review a sample and confirm the final specifications before approving production.
Illustrative packaging concept

Write down what the package needs to do

Start with the product rather than the artwork. Record its dimensions, packed weight, fragile areas and how it will reach the customer. A box for a retail shelf has different requirements from one that travels through a parcel network. Include any inserts, wrapping or multiple-product arrangements in your description.

Make the brief easy to compare

Give each supplier the same quantity, internal dimensions, material preference, print coverage, delivery ZIP code and target arrival date. Explain which choices are fixed and where you would welcome a recommendation. Ask suppliers to identify sample, setup, tooling and freight costs separately so you can compare the complete proposal.

Leave time to review a sample

Ask what sample options are available before you commit to production. Check the product fit, opening experience and assembly process. Confirm who prepares the dieline and how artwork approval works. Record the final specifications and any changes in writing before placing an order.
